Small Batch Sizes Enable Everything—Even in the Government

Lean practices teach us that small batch sizes optimize flow of value to market. Small batch sizes also help organizations focus on building quality into systems by enabling the power of continuous integration, encouraging faster feedback cycles, increasing our ability to debug, emphasizing a focus on simplicity, decreasing lead and cycle time, and discouraging "snowplowing" testing efforts. These practices are critical for building quality into our products. In the government sector, it also enables the alignment of traditional cost accounting methods, such as earned value management, constraints and agile for project management tracking. Kimberly Davis will discuss how a work decomposition process, creating small batch sizes, has been a critical component in facilitating quality and alignment for government agencies.

As an agile solutions architect, Kimberly Davis supports her company, ASRC Federal, in leading large Scaled Agile transformations for government agencies across their corporate enterprise. This effort also includes proposal support, client meeting support on enterprise agility offerings, Scaled Agile certification trainings, powering an agile CoP and enabling the Agile component of their enterprise Software Center of Excellence. Kimberly has a passion for Agile implementation problem solving, Agile transformations, and building an Agile culture and has presented at conferences in the Philadelphia area, where she is also an AgilePhilly mentor. Kimberly is a Scaled Agile Program Consultant (SPC), giving her the ability to train and certify others in Scaled Agile practices. She holds many additional agile certifications, as she believes it is essential to continuously improve in oneself: SA, SP, CSM, CSPO, CAL1, ICP-FDO, and PMI-ACP. Kimberly also has a background in software development and project management, with a degree in computer science and an MBA.
