Escape Velocity: Better Metrics for Agile Teams

Add to calendar

If your manager or ScrumMaster obsesses over velocity, this session is for you. Join Doc Norton as he raises awareness around potential issues with metrics in general, discusses why velocity is insufficient, and explores alternative techniques to measure progress and support teams. Doc will share stories demonstrating why velocity isn't a very good metric and give the science to back it up. He'll also detail the common velocity antipatterns and discuss what metrics you could use instead, like cycle time, lead time, cumulative flow diagrams, and Team Joy. Learn about concepts such as the Hawthorne effect, Goodhart's law, and perverse incentives, as well as how to forecast when your work will be done and how to better diagnose and solve the impediments to your progress and the flaws in your systems of work. If you have found velocity lacking, come discover better ways to measure progress.
